Huntington Story

As 53 year old Janice Jones was eating, her dog knocked a 9 mm handgun onto the ground that discharged with contact of the floor, sending a bullet through her leg.

Jones lives in Barstow, California in a motor home was parked on Beach Boulevard near Highway 1 when the accident occurred.

Jones was shot in the right leg around 10 p.m.” California Highway Patrol press liaison Tammy Rye said. “It could have been worse. The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank.”

Jones was taken to Huntington Beach Hospital immediately, but later moved to Irvine Medical Center.

"Jones has been taken into Huntington Beach Hospital to be treated for her injuries," hospital spokesperson Jim Washington said.

Jones' dog, Tombo, was taken in by the Huntington Beach Animal Control officers.

"The dog seemed malnourished and had fresh cigarette burns on his forehead," animal control officer Janet Ngo said.

Ngo says that her office will likely explore filing animal abuse charges against Jones.

“It could've done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” Ngo said.

Along with possible abuse, Jones was cited for expired plates and not having a permit for her gun.

"The county’s district attorney’s office is considering whether to charge her in relation to the gun accident," Rye said. "Jones doesn’t have a permit for the gun."
