Movie Review Preview

‘Love Simon’ a powerful page torn from the John Hughes filmmaking playbook

  1. Chicago Sun-Times
  2. Richard Roeper
  3. 8/10 score
  4. Some high points of the movie include having a very likable protagonist and a reasonable suburban setting with insight into the students' lives in and outside of high school. The movie has a plot filled with humor, romance, internal conflicts, and mystery.
  5. A low point of the movie include the protagonist's unrealistic and exaggerated behaviors to bully Simon, which seems to change the story line at times.
  6. The quotes, "Maybe it’s too easy to say “Love, Simon” feels like a 21st century John Hughes high school movie — a really good John Hughes high school movie — but I can’t tell you it feels like anything else, because you know what? It feels like a 21st century John Hughes high school movie", "Director Greg Berlanti does a nimble job of placing us in Simon’s shoes as he tries to figure out the identity of Blue", and "As the romantic mystery develops, the light comedy keeps us amused," do a good job of showing how the reviewer feels about the movie.

  1. Detroit News
  2. Adam Graham
  3. 5/10 score
  4. Some high points the movie include the actors chosen to play each roll(until they are sucked into a video game and switched round) and the resemblance to The Breakfast Club and original Jumanji movies.
  5. Some low points of the movie include the low quality compared to the original movie, the seemingly pointless plot, and how the atmosphere throughout the movie feels entirely forced.
  6. The quotes, "This sequel/reboot can’t manage that much, and is overly convoluted for no reason," and "The action within the video game has no correlation to the way actual video games are played, it’s just a cheap way to wedge the jungle setting into the story. It’s why this “Jumanji” feels reverse engineered from spare parts that don’t go together," reveal how the reviewer feels about the movie.
